The Eye Care-a-Van Visits Bethesda Cathedral
Southeast CDC's public assistance review sessions cover a large number of low-income elderly who have little or no savings, but there are still many who barely make ends meet. We were contacted by Bethesda Cathedral, who had a list of residents in the Bedok and Chai Chee neighbourhoods who depended on subsidies for rent, food and other daily necessities, and brought the Eye Care-a-Van to screen their eye health.
October 29, 2008 — Managing Director Peter Koh, The Eye Site assistant manager/optometrist Roger Lim and The Lens Men - Parkway Parade optician Poon Cheng Boon screened a total of 34 patients, including some church staff and volunteers, and dispensed a total of 14 brand new spectacles for near and distance vision. We were particularly moved by one wheelchair-bound patient who suffered from kidney failure and leukemia, and could not afford the treatment she needed. Although a pair of glasses to correct her myopia will do little to help her general condition, we hope that it will in some way help her enjoy a better quality of life with sharper vision.
