The Lens Men Eye Care-a-Van Drives Vision Health Home to Jalan Besar's Needy Senior Citizens

On October 5, 2008, Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts Dr. Lee Boon Yang sent The Lens Men Eye Care-a-Van - Singapore's first and only mobile eye screening clinic - off on its maiden voyage, a free eye screening event for elderly and needy residents of Jalan Besar.

October 6, 2008 — After a ribbon-cutting ceremony and Dr. Lee turned on the Eye Care-a-Van's ignition, our journey to bring free primary eye care in a professional and comfortable setting to underprivileged Singaporeans all across the country officially began!!

Our first stop was Jalan Besar Community Club, where we screened 60 elderly residents on public assistance for potential eye disease and tested their vision capabilities. For all patients who require vision correction, we pledged to donate a brand new pair of spectacles to each one so they can enjoy good eyesight and as a result, a higher quality of life. In total, The Lens Men will be donating 9 distance vision spectacles and 29 reading glasses to 25 patients. We will also be providing 44 elderly with referral letters that they can bring to polyclinics to further diagnosis ailments such as cataracts and glaucoma. We are glad to have detected these symptoms, as early treatment can prevent further complications and eventual blindness.

We would like to thank the Jalan Besar Wellness Programme for graciously inviting us to help their residents and Dr. Lee for helping us launch our eye care mission. Our next free eye screening will be held at Bethesa Cathedral in Bedok, so look out for the Eye Care-a-Van on a street near you! To schedule an appointment with The Lens Men Eye Care-a-Van for a community, charity or corporate eye screening event, please contact Desiree Koh at 6846.8028 (office), 9651.4741 (mobile) or desireekoh@thelensmen.com. We hope you understand that first priority will always be given to needy and immobile patients.
