Helping the Children's Aid Society

The Lens Men and The Eye Site were recently invited by long-time customer and family friend Agnes Wong to help support the UOB Group's community service initiatives by providing free eye screenings for kids at the Children's Aid Society. Needless to say, we stepped right up to the task immediately!

May 27, 2008 — The Children's Aid Society houses up to 60 children from dysfunctional families and whose parents cannot take responsibe care of them on a peaceful, clean and comfortable home on Clementi Road. Recently, Agnes and her community service team found that many of these kids were squinting over their schoolwork or heard from their school teachers that they weren't able to see properly in class. After hearing about our The Gift of Sight programme, Agnes worked with us to organise an eye screening event at the home for 16 children on May 22, 2008.

Conducted by The Eye Site optometrist Roger Lim and The Lens Men - The Centrepoint manager/optician Ben Chan using equipment generously loaned by Ning Kwong Optical, we found that 13 kids needed corrective vision or new prescriptions on their existing glasses -- imagine having to go through school and play for several months without being able to see properly! Not only can this affect their studies, this also puts the kids at risk when they participate in sports or other activities. We will be donating free spectacles for all these kids, with the help of our valued partner Essilor Singapore.
