Good Eye Care Begins with Wellness Day at MacPherson Community Club

The Lens Men and The Eye Site were thrilled to receive an invitation from Mayor Matthias Yao and the Southeast CDC to conduct free eye screening at Wellness Day, to mark the launch of a wellness programme for residents of the MacPherson area!

May 27, 2008 — Wellness Day was hosted by Mayor Yao, with MP Lim Boon Heng as guest of honour and SingHealth sponsoring health care booths and seminars to educate MacPherson neighbors -- particularly senior citizens -- on the importance of maintaining fitness of the body and mind. Expecting a crowd of 1,000 patients, The Lens Men recruited former optometrist interns Wee Hui Ling (The Lens Men - Parkway Parade) and Lim Xue Ting (The Lens Men - Compass Point) to help out, together with six of their peers from the optometry programme at Singapore Polytechnic. We also kept it all in the family as Koh cousins Cheryl Kow and Irvin Ngan helped out with patient registration, while creative maven Ade Koh brought lunch and goodies for everyone!

With The Eye Site optometrist Roger Lim serving as supervisor, the team screened 175 patients in four hours. Fortunately, we found many MacPherson residents enjoying good and healthy vision, but also detected cases of cataracts and other sight-threatening diseases in others. We will be working with the People's Association to ensure these patients are referred to an ophthalmologist as soon as possible so they can be treated. We will also be extending substantial subsidies for all who require prescription eyeglasses.

According to MP Lim, the Wellness Programme is designed to promote health and aging at a holistic level through services and activities that cater to the physical, social, intellectual, vocational, emotional and spiritual needs of seniors. The Lens Men and The Eye Site are thrilled to have been a part of such an important programme, recognising the importance of healthy vision in leading a fulfilling life!
