A global survey conducted by The Vision Care Institute found that only 28 percent of Singaporean adults have had a thorough eye examination, which consists of tests beyond visual acuity (regular eye test to diagnose power) to detect symptoms of eye ailments. Compared to the global average of 50 percent, this is an alarming statistic, considering that Singaporeans overwhemingly feel sight is their most important sense. Yet we don't always take the right steps to maintain our eye health.
Unfortunately, many of us subscribe to the faulty belief that seeing clearly without problems such as redness, itchy sensations or other irritations equates healthy eyes. The bad news is that eye diseases are often silent hazards - for example, glaucoma, an increased pressure in the eye that results in a progressive and permanent loss of vision, rarely causes symptoms and can only be detected by a thorough eye exam.
That's why The Lens Men and The Eye Site are in full and complete support of the Bright Ribbon Campaign, an initiative to raise the standard of eye health in Singapore and remind everyone of the important need for a thorough eye exam yearly (every three to six months for children). Think of it as going to the dentist for your annual check-up - but a lot less scary! In fact, thorough eye exams are completely comfortable and conducted in a very relaxed environment - you're in very good hands with our team of experienced and professional optometrists. Take a look at how we care for your eyes: http://www.thelensmen.com/eyecareservices.
So whenever you see the Bright Ribbon, ask if you or your family members have had a thorough eye exam in the last year. If not, give us a call and schedule an appointment, or drop by any of our stores. You can also donate a thorough eye exam to someone less fortunate at www.brightribbon.com.sg - the campaign supports Gracehaven, Boys' Town and Beyond Social Services. The Lens Men and The Eye Site will be donating brand new spectacles to all patients who require vison correction.
Always remember - sight first!
